WriteSteps Founder To Discuss K-5 Writing and the Common Core Standards on Lifetime Television

ANN ARBOR, MI (PRBUZZ) February 9, 2012 – Suzanne Klein, Common Core specialist and founder of WriteSteps, an innovative elementary school writing program, will make two television appearances this month to discuss the new Common Core State Standards. She will be featured on the Parent Teacher Corner segment of The Balancing Act, airing on Lifetime Television February 21 and 28 at 7:00 a.m.ET/PT.

Klein is a former elementary school teacher who speaks nationally on best practices in teaching the Common Core Standards for writing. WriteSteps is an award-winning company that offers more than 500 daily lesson plans and 28 teaching videos addressing the Common Core State Standards for writing and grammar. The Common Core Standards have been adopted by 46 states. As a result, instructional leaders are re-evaluating curricula in English language arts and mathematics to meet the new standards.

“Writing is a significant teaching challenge for many K-5 educators, yet the Common Core elevates its importance beginning in kindergarten,” Klein said. “I’m excited about sharing writing tips with television viewers, because we want every child in the U.S. to be successful learning the writing skills outlined in the new standards. A strong foundation will give all students the skills they need for college and career readiness.”

WriteSteps integrates best practices including writer’s workshop and the 6 Traits of effective writing into daily lesson plans that break the complex process of writing into manageable parts. The program was founded in 2007 and launched nationally in September with a major expansion focusing entirely on the Common Core Standards for writing and grammar.

“We foster thriving communities of writers starting in kindergarten, and we’re successful because we demystify the writing process for teachers and we know how to engage students,” Klein said. “We’re teacher owned and operated, so we understand the realities of today’s classrooms. Schools using WriteSteps have seen excellent results, increasing test scores as much as 30 percent in just a few years, and I’m proud to say that 98 percent of WriteSteps teachers recommend our lessons to colleagues.”

“With the right tools, teachers can motivate all kinds of learners, even struggling writers,” Klein added. “The Common Core Standards in writing are an exciting step forward for our nation’s children, and I’m grateful to Lifetime Television and The Learning First Alliance for helping us spread the word with parents and educational leaders across the country.”

Klein will be joined on The Balancing Act by Cheryl Williams, executive director of The Learning First Alliance, who will educate the audience about the Common Core State Standards and the need for teacher-friendly instructional materials that will help schools transition before Common Core assessments are fully implemented in 2014-2015.
