WriteSteps Announces K-5 Writing Lessons and iPad2 Offer to Mark Common Core State Standards Launch

ANN ARBOR, MI  / PRBuzz.com / February 8, 2012 — WriteSteps, an innovative writing program for K-5 students, today announced a bonus incentive to mark its latest release, which features more than 500 daily lessons focused on the Common Core State Standards for writing and grammar. WriteSteps’ curriculum expansion also debuts a web-based teacher resource, eWriteSteps, as well as 28 teaching videos that demonstrate Common Core lessons while integrating best practices such as writer’s workshop and the 6 Traits of effective writing.

“We know that teaching writing is a significant challenge for many K-5 educators, yet the Common Core elevates writing substantially in K-5 classrooms,” said Suzanne Klein, WriteSteps Founder and CEO, a former elementary teacher who speaks nationally on best practices in teaching the Common Core Standards for writing. “We want teachers in every U.S. school to experience for themselves how easy it can be to give students strong Common Core writing skills. That’s why we’re offering all K-5 teachers a complimentary 30-day trial of our lessons, as well as a newApple® iPad2® for their classrooms when they inspire their instructional leaders to adopt our program school-wide – and we believe they will!  Students of all learning styles are able to succeed with WriteSteps, and we want the world to know.”

Focused on demystifying writing instruction, WriteSteps features daily lesson plans that fuse the writer’s workshop approach with the 6 Traits using Madeline Hunter lesson steps to reach all kinds of learners and break down the complex process of writing into manageable parts. The program also provides more than 500 visual aids to teach organization and grammar/ conventions. It includes more than 100 authentic student writing samples that motivate and guide K-5 learners to internalize Common Core skills in a variety of genres, including opinion writing and research.

“There is a well-established body of best practices that truly works in K-5 writing instruction,” Klein said. “The challenge is that many K-5 teachers aren’t familiar with them. We’ve integrated best practices with the Common Core in a comprehensive, easy-to-use approach that immerses students in valuable skills development but doesn’t require months of extra study and planning to put them together in a Common Core approach. Elementary teachers are generalists, and they’re busy. They need effective, teacher-friendly instructional resources. The reality is that without a strong Common Core writing program, few will be able to piece together the kinds of writing lessons students need.”

“WriteSteps fosters thriving writing communities starting with our youngest learners in kindergarten,” Klein continued, “and our students also perform well when they take standardized tests. We can help teachers be successful in implementing these standards so that all students are ready for the Common Core assessments in 2014-2015.”
